My latest novel, FACES, is about a young boy called Danny Cadogan. Just before Danny’s fourteenth birthday, his father leaves and he quickly realises that, in order to look after his mother, brother and sister, he’ll need to make something of himself. And so, with his childhood friend, Michael, Danny becomes a Face. Not just a Face, but the most feared Face in the Smoke.

But Danny’s determination to be someone will ultimately destroy not only himself but also those around him. Closest of whom is Mary, his wife. Danny’s relationship with his mother has coloured his relationship with Mary. He loves her but he also hates her. And so, not only is he unfaithful, he also beats the life out of her. Michael, however, is devoted (and faithful) to his wife, Carole.

The male characters in my books are either devoted to one woman or they’re inherently unfaithful. And I think that’s the way it is in real life. But even the serial womanisers always seem to go back to their wife. I often think the wives who wait for their husband to return to them, the women people think are stupid, are actually the stronger ones because they’re prepared to ignore what everyone else says and make their own choices in life. Mary is much stronger than everyone gives her credit for and I think that even she doesn’t realize quite how strong she actually is.

Right now I’m working on my next novel which is about a mother and daughter who are involved in prostitution – gripping stuff!
